Exhibition "Ādas" (Skins) at Pauls Stradiņš Museum for History of Medicine
Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Anatomy Museum invites you to an exhibition Ādas (Skins), which will be open from 31 August at Pauls Stradiņš Museum for History of Medicine at 1 Antonijas iela. Ādas is an interdisciplinary research and art project which is a joint collaboration between artist Ausma Šmite with the central focus — the restored collection of tattooed skins in the RSU Anatomy Museum.
In the exhibition, visitors are invited to view the collection of tattooed skins which is a rare and unique contemporary testimony to tattooing traditions in the territory of Latvia from the late 19th to the early 20th century, as well as a testimony to the scientific interests of anatomists of that time. The exhibition is also a collaboration with Ausma Šmite, containing a collection of tattoos from the future. Looking at the historical skin specimens with tattooed ships, anchors, helms, unusual creatures and raunchy scenes, the artist has viewed the tattoo as a custodian of memories that helps to recall — both for yourself and for others — who you are, where you have been and what you have done. It is a body map which helps to orientate in one's own life and that of others. The curator of the exhibition is Ieva Lībiete, RSU assistant professor, and development manager at the Anatomy Museum and the designer is Aleksejs Koškins. The exhibition will be open until 29 December 2018. The exhibition Ādas (Skins) is the first exhibition open to the general public since the start of reconstruction of the RSU Anatomy Museum. The opening of the new Anatomy Museum is planned at the end of 2019 and it will be located in its historical location – the Anatomical Theatre complex at 9 Kronvalda bulvāris. |
